[Spencer, IA]- Spencer Community Theatre announces the Northwest Iowa premiere of “Footloose,” opening August 7 and running through August 10.
One of the most energetic musicals to hit the silver screen will rock the live stage when the Spencer Community Children’s Theatre presents their Summer Teen production of “Footloose.” Featuring a talented group of teens and adults in and around the Spencer area, “Footloose” tells the story of a young man who, after his father leaves him, moves to a small town with a ban on dancing.
Shaley Cullen, Director and Choreographer of many previous SCT Productions, is at the helm of this exciting experience. She describes the story of “Footloose” as a timeless struggle to which most can relate. “Teens have always struggled to assert their personal freedom, and adults have always struggled to know exactly when the time is right to loosen control. Where there is risk, there is fear, and our struggle to move forward despite that fear is the classic conflict of the show.”
Based on a book by Dean Pitchford and featuring the music of Tom Snow, Eric Carmen, Kenny Loggins and Sammy Hagar, “Footloose” features an Oscar- and Tony- nominated Top 40 score with such popular favorites as “Holding Out for a Hero,” “Let’s Hear it for the Boy,” “Almost Paradise” and of course, “Footloose.” In addition to the known favorites, audiences will be delighted by the dynamic new songs that have been added for the stage version, such as “Heaven Help Me” and “Mama Says.”
The cast of 33 actors, singers, and dancers and seven-piece band bring “Footloose” to life in a way that is sure to touch teens and adults alike. While the play is about teenagers and teenage issues, the adult audience will enjoy the depth of the story and the universal theme of healing.
Tickets for “Footloose” are on sale now. Tickets may be reserved through the SCT Box Office at 262-7336. Box office hours are 11- 5 Monday through Friday. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. August 7, 8, and 9 with a 2 p.m. matinees on Sunday, August 10.

Be sure to stop into Arts on Grand and get your tickets to this Saturday’s Backyard Bach and Blues, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”
“The committee has put a tremendous amount of effort into planning this year’s event,” SAAC board member and publicity chairperson Jill Barr said. “We want everyone to have a great time.”
“A Midsummer Night’s Dream” festivities will begin this Saturday at 7pm, in the backyard of Dr. Bill and Kathy Follows. Guests can eat, drink and mingle, while admiring the unique greenery. Entertainment will be provided by the Vista Chamber Players string quartet and Mission Theatre Company.
“Our menu and décor are Renaissance-inspired,” Barr said, “So the food is really hearty—hand carved meats, vegetables and lots of bread. I doubt anyone will leave with an empty stomach! Beer and wine will be served too, as well as non-alcoholic beverages.”
The first Backyard Bach & Blues was in 1992. Arts on Grand chose that name to represent two musical styles at two locations. Guests were invited to travel between two homes and sample the artistic choices in music and food. In 2002, Arts on Grand chose to consolidate the celebration to one yard, with the music, food and setting revolving around one theme. Last year’s Backyard Bach & Blues theme was “The Great Gatsby Party at the Mansion,” and the event took place at the Grand Avenue home of Neal and Kitty Conover.
The party has become one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the summer season, in addition to being a major annual fundraiser. Proceeds from ticket sales go toward operating expenses for Arts on Grand, an artist’s studio/gallery, and home to the Spencer Area Arts Council, a nonprofit organization founded in 1979. To purchase tickets to this year’s Backyard Bach & Blues, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” please call (712) 262-4307 or stop by the gallery at 408 Grand Ave., Spencer.
