The Iowa Horn Quartet will “blow” into Spencer on Friday, March 28, for a 7:30 p.m. performance at Grace United Methodist Church. This is the second of two additional concerts presented this season by the Spencer Area Concert Association. The quartet will perform classical and contemporary works ranging from Bach and Castelnuovo-
Tedesco to Pascal Proust and Kerry Turner.
The Iowa Horn Quartet is a newly-formed group of graduate horn students from the University of Iowa. Hailing from California, Wisconsin, Virginia, and Pennsylvania, the members represent a gathering of diverse backgrounds. Their selection of music is as diverse as their individual origins. As an ensemble, they have made it a priority to study music from a variety of time periods and of assorted styles: Renaissance and Baroque transcriptions, a newly composed work by quartet member Michael Wall, and everything in between. With each performance, the quartet strives to engage and inform the audience, and to ignite in others the same love of music that has brought them together.
This concert has been made possible in part by a grant from the Clay County Community Foundation, which allowed the Concert Association to add two “Visiting Artist” concerts in cooperation with the Iowa Regents Universities.
Admission to the concert is free to members of the Spencer Area Concert Association. Members of the Algona, Sheldon, and Windom concert associations may also attend free by presenting their membership cards at the door. Individual tickets for non-members will be available at the door on the evening of the performance. Ticket prices are $10 (adults), $5 (students), or $20 (families).
In addition, memberships for the remainder of the concert season will be available at the door at specially discounted prices of $30 for adults, $10 for students, and $65 for families. Members can attend the last two concerts in the Spencer Area Concert Association’s 2007–2008 season, which will conclude with “Simply Sinatra” on May 9. In addition, they can use their Spencer membership cards for free admission to programs presented by concert associations in Algona, Sheldon, and Windom, MN. Those programs include the Golden Dragon Acrobats on March 31 in Windom and the Hunt Family Fiddlers in both Algona and Sheldon, both in April.
As with other concerts this year, free transportation is available for Spencer members who need it thanks to the Regional Transit Authority (Rides) and Spencer Municipal Utilities. To arrange for transportation, phone 712-262-4500 by noon Thursday, March 27.

[Wahpeton, IA] – ArtsLIVE has teamed up with the Iowa Lakeside Lab and Friends of the Lakeside Lab to offer the first-ever ArtsLIVE People Project to be held Jan. 26. The project will include the creation of a large-scale work of art on the ice of West Lake Okoboji during the 2008 University of Okoboji Winter Games.
“We want to get as many people as possible out onto the ice to be a part of art,” ArtsLIVE executive director Alyssa Jackson said. “This entire project is centered on community participation in art.”
The People Project will involve Spencer artist Chad Elliott arranging participants in an artistic design on the ice of Little Miller’s Bay, just down a hill from the Iowa Lakeside Lab dining hall. Elliott has created a design that combines both art and ecology for the event and will be on-hand Jan. 26 to position people starting at 1 p.m. All ages are welcomed to be a participant in the event.
“What better way to get people involved in art than to make them a part of art,” Elliott said.
Once participants are lined up, a plane will be flown over the project to take an aerial photo. Participants are encouraged to dress for the weather and warm drinks will be provided at the event.
While the people project takes place at 1 p.m., there will also be other art and ecology activities held indoors at the Iowa Lakeside Lab from 2-4 p.m. The dining hall will also be open for spectators to view the event.
Due to limited parking at the Iowa Lakeside Lab during the winter, a shuttle service will be provided for participants in the ArtsLIVE People project. Participants are asked to meet at the Peace Corner parking lot at the intersection of highway 9 and 86 in Spirit Lake (across from Vick’s corner) at 12:30 p.m., Jan. 26. A shuttle will take participants to the Iowa Lakeside Lab. The estimated length of the ArtsLIVE People Project is one hour. The shuttle service will continue to run until 4:30 p.m. Spectators of the event are welcomed to park at the Iowa Lakeside Lab.
Sponsors of the event are Custom Creations, Deidre Rosenboom Design, Friends of the Lakeside Lab, Iowa Lakeside Laboratory, Judy Hemphill Photography, Leading Edge Aviation, Pearson Lakes Art Center, Tom and Molly Bedell and The Prairie Chick.
